Al-Haytham: Water Magnifying Glass

Al-Haytham: Water Magnifying Glass

thingiverse

This is a homemade water magnifying lens, crafted instead of using glass or plastic. I trapped water between two sheets of transparent food wrap. When water fills the space between the two sheets it pushes them to the sides and creates a curvature similar to that of a glass lens. By adjusting the amount of water, you can control the focal length of the lens. I attempted using clear plastic bags but they tore when assembling the magnifying lens. The food wrap proved tear-resistant. Also use food wrap when closing the bottom plug, it will help with leaking water from the bottom and prevent air from entering and pushing water out. I dubbed this design Al-Haythm in honor of the renowned Arabic scientist Hasan Ibn al-Haytham, who is widely regarded as the father of modern optics.
