The Akash missile defense system, named after the Sanskrit word for sky, is a medium-range mobile surface-to-air missile developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation, Ordnance Factories Board, and Bharat Electronics. Capable of targeting aircraft up to 30 km away at altitudes of 18,000 m, the system has a nuclear warhead option that enables it to destroy both aircraft and ballistic missile warheads. In service with the Indian Army and Air Force, an Akash battery comprises four 3D radars and four launchers with three missiles each, tracking up to 64 targets and attacking 12 of them. The high-explosive, pre-fragmented warhead weighs 60 kg, and the system is fully mobile, protecting moving vehicle convoys. Integrated on both wheeled and tracked vehicles, the Akash primarily serves as an air defense SAM but has also been tested for missile defense. Providing coverage for 2,000 km², India's military has placed combined orders for the Akash system, radars (WLR and Surveillance), totaling $5.2 billion (INR 23,300 crore).
