The AK-74 is an assault rifle created by Soviet weapons designer Mikhail Kalashnikov in the early 1970s to replace the earlier AKM. The AKM itself was a refined version of the AK-47. The AK-74 uses a smaller 5.45×39mm cartridge, replacing the 7.62×39mm chambering found in earlier Kalashnikov-pattern weapons. The rifle first saw action with Soviet forces during the 1979 Afghanistan conflict. According to the head of the Afghan bureau of Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence, the CIA paid $5,000 for the first AK-74 captured by the Mujahideen during the Soviet–Afghan War. Today, most countries of the former Soviet Union use the rifle. Licensed copies were produced in Bulgaria as the AK-74, AKS-74 and AKS-74U. The former East Germany also produced licensed copies, known as the MPi-AK-74N, MPi-AKS-74N and MPi-AKS-74NK.
