The AK-47, officially known as the Avtomat Kalashnikova (Russian: Автома́т Кала́шникова, tr. Avtomát Kaláshnikova), is a 7.62×39mm assault rifle developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the Soviet Union. It's the originating firearm of the Kalashnikov family. Design work on the AK-47 started in 1945 and was presented for official military trials in 1946. The fixed-stock version entered active service with selected units of the Soviet Army in 1948, after early development led to the AKS (S—Skladnoy), a folding stock model. In early 1949, the AK-47 was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces and used by most member states of the Warsaw Pact. The AK-47 remains the world's most popular assault rifle due to its reliability in harsh conditions, low production costs compared to Western weapons, global availability, and ease of use. It has been manufactured worldwide and seen service with armed forces and insurgent groups globally, serving as a basis for developing various firearms types. By 2004, an estimated 100 million Kalashnikov family firearms existed worldwide, with three-quarters being AK-47s.
