A muzzle brake/recoil compensator is a muzzle-attached device that channels propellant gases to counter recoil & rising barrel during rapid firing. Initially designed for artillery, it was standard on many anti-tank guns on tanks to minimize recoil space requirements. Employed in numerous forms for rifles/pistols, they assist with recoil control and the usual post-firing barrel rise. Used in practical pistol competitions where they are called compensators.
