The AK-47 is a renowned selective-fire, gas-operated 7.62x39mm assault rifle initially developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov. Officially named Avtomat Kalashnikova in Soviet documentation, it's also famously called Kalashnikov, AK or Russian slang, Kalash. Design work on this iconic weapon began post-World War II (1945). In 1948, the fixed-stock version was integrated into selected Soviet Army units. The AKS, an early design variant with a folding metal shoulder stock, was another development. Accepted by Soviet Armed Forces in 1949, the AK-47 was widely used across Warsaw Pact member states. Despite being six decades old, it remains the most popular and extensively used assault rifle worldwide due to its robust reliability under harsh conditions, lower production costs compared to Western counterparts, global availability, and ease of use. Manufactured in numerous countries, serving armed forces and irregular groups globally, AK-47 served as a base for many individual and crew-served firearms development. The total number of AK-type rifles produced surpasses all other assault rifles combined.
