The AK-47, a renowned selective-fire 7.62x39mm assault rifle developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the Soviet Union, is officially known as Avtomat Kalashnikova. Known also as Kalash or AK, it was designed in 1945 post-WWII and trialed in 1946. The fixed-stock version began active service in 1948 with select Soviet Army units. Its folding metal shoulder stock variant, AKS, was an early development. In 1949, it was officially adopted by the Soviet Armed Forces and used extensively across Warsaw Pact member states. Despite being six decades old, its models and variants remain popular globally due to their durability, low production costs, accessibility, and ease of use. Manufactured in numerous countries and utilized by armed forces and irregular groups worldwide, the AK-47 served as the basis for developing various individual and crew-served firearms; more AK-type rifles have been produced than any other assault rifle type.
