Airwolf Stacked Vector model
thingiverse
Here's an idea I've been kicking around for a while now, and I thought I'd share it with you folks for free. It's a stacked vector concept that lets you recreate any 3D model in any material that comes in sheet form. I'm probably not the first person to think of this, but here it is anyway. The basic idea is to slice a 3D model into slices as wide as your chosen real-world material, then render out the profiles and cut them out of that material using dowels as locators. I used this method to build a wooden Airwolf model and a spaceship from an old 80s TV show. Check out the V Spaceship here - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2790202. Cutting each slice by hand was a real pain, but I've supplied the files in DXF and AI formats, so you can cut them with a CNC machine if you want. Since this method can be scaled up using a projector, I'm planning to use it to build a full-size Zuul terror dog from Ghostbusters out of large foam sheets. I used a slice modifier in 3ds Max to make this work, but I'm sure it's possible in most 3D programs.
