Airplane de-icer and engine preheater from a leaf blower
thingiverse
This part converts a multi-brand 4-stroke leaf blower into a winter tool for small airplane flying. The goal was to create a standalone pre-heater and frost/snow remover which ran on gas from the airplane (100LL). It works by sucking in the oil-free hot engine exhaust into the blower, with the engine cooling air also going into the output stream. You'll need 3x 1/4-20 studs or dowels as part joiners. Some of the smaller parts might need trimming. The subject leaf blower is sold as Craftsman, Troy-bilt, and Cub Cadet, among others. Here's a link to it: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Cub-Cadet-150-MPH-450-CFM-4-Cycle-25cc-Gas-Handheld-Leaf-Blower-Vac-BV428/205743488 The key point of the blower selection is its 4-stroke design. Instead of using SAE30, I use 10W30. From the leaf blower, remove the intake cover and the guard over the exhaust. Please don't run this contraption above 60F outside temperature or risk melting it down. Pictured models include a circulation duct attachment to circulate across the engine/cowl, but this feature is not included in the model.
