I bought a used Airforce Airguns Talon SS in .22, unaware that early versions lacked baffles in the shroud. I've since learned that current models come standard with them. There's a kit available to add baffles for $80, but upgrading seemed unnecessary. The store-bought kit includes three baffles and a spacer; I opted for four slightly shorter baffles and a smaller spacer instead. While it's unclear whether this configuration works better than the paid option, it's sufficient - my neighbors no longer complain about noise when I shoot in my backyard late at night. I attempted to record sound levels before adding the baffles but was unsuccessful due to an app error on my phone, which reported 77 decibels both pre- and post-installation. The rifle now emits a level of noise comparable to a .22 rimfire, yet it's still quiet enough for backyard shooting in a dense urban environment. Fabricating the kit: I used Hatchbox PLA for these parts as I find this material more precise than ABS when working with small components. Although I ran out of blue filament mid-project, white and blue are virtually identical in terms of properties. So far, about 30 pellets have been fired through it without any issues; if longevity problems arise, I may try using ABS or TPU. For infill, I used 25% with three perimeters around the entire piece, incorporating supports for added stability. Once printed, I slightly filed out the center holes to manually adjust pellet clearance as needed. Next, I removed the front barrel bushing from the barrel and drilled five 1/8-inch holes to provide more room for gas expansion - a feature also present in store-bought kits. Subsequently, I drilled two 1/8-inch holes underneath the foregrip for effective venting; this design prevents debris entry while allowing air to escape. I reassembled the rifle, adding the spacer and four baffles in sequence. Everything fits perfectly with no movement when the front cap is in place. The result: significantly reduced noise levels without compromising accuracy.
