Place a clear center tube, crafted from a plastic (acrylic) test tube, and a 10mm or so styrofoam sphere inside. The upper and lower caps are more intricate than they seem and are challenging to print accurately. Small holes on the sides provide space for miniature IR LED and Diode components, extracted from a TCRT50. Utilize a 4.6k resistor on the Diode anode and a 100 ohm resistor on the LED anode. The voltage at the Diode's anode will be approximately .13 volts when the styrofoam sphere is floating, 2.5 volts when it's submerged. This design was saved in Tinkercad.
