The Sukhoi Su-33, an all-weather carrier-based twin-engine air superiority fighter derived from the Su-27, was initially known as the Su-27K. Featuring a strengthened undercarriage and structure, folding wings and stabilators for carrier operations, the aircraft has canards and larger wings for increased lift. Equipped with upgraded engines, a twin nose wheel, and air refueling capabilities, it first saw use in operations in 1995 on board the Admiral Kuznetsov, officially entering service in August 1998. Despite plans to produce only 24 aircraft due to post-Soviet Union downsizing of the Russian Navy, attempted sales to China and India fell through. With Su-33 retirements planned upon reaching end of service life, the navy opted for MiG-29K replacements in 2009. The Su-33 is a single-seater shipboard aircraft with folding wings and horizontal tail for hangar storage, taking off via trampline and landing aerially.
