In the "Put Us to the Test Challenge 2013," participants were tasked with designing a product utilizing reverse engineering and CFD/FEA techniques. A contestant engineered an aircraft wing using Eppler E420 aerofoil, measuring 18 inches in chord and 4.5 feet in span, featuring seven ribs but no ailerons or flaps. The design was analyzed with SolidWorks Flow Simulation Premium 2013, revealing a lift-to-drag ratio of 2.3 using a coarse mesh at 20 m/s, under standard temperature and pressure conditions, and 50% humidity at sea level. Stress calculations conducted with SolidWorks Simulation Premium 2013, employing a fine mesh and no penetration contacts, yielded a Factor of Safety of approximately 24.
