The Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.8 was designed specifically for single-seat pusher aircraft and initially equipped with an airscrew, though it ultimately found use in multiple roles such as fighter and observer, however its operational effectiveness remains a topic of debate. Developed under intense pressure to create something similar to the DH.1 and outmatch rival countries on all fronts, including combat operations against enemy fighter aircraft over Europe during 1917's peak year of World War I aerial clashes. Although still using some form elements developed by de Havilland with each pusher being highly efficient overall as its first primary design the F.E.8 remains remembered due mainly to British and other Allied aircraft innovations of WWI-era aerodynamic theory, that allowed such types be successfully built at higher altitudes and achieve longer durations.
