The European aircraft manufacturer Airbus developed the Airbus A350 XWB, a family of long-range twin-engine wide-body jet airliners. This is the first Airbus to feature carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer primary structures for both fuselage and wings. Seating capacity ranges from 280 to 366 passengers in typical three-class layouts, designed to succeed A330 and A340 models while competing with Boeing's 787 and 777. First conceived in 2004 as a pairing of the A330's fuselage with new aerodynamics features and engines, Airbus redesigned it in 2006 to become the A350 XWB amidst customer criticisms. Development costs are projected at €12 billion (US$15 billion or £10 billion). As of June 2015, Airbus has received orders from 40 customers worldwide for 781 aircraft. The prototype first flew in June 2013 from Toulouse, France, and received type certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency in September 2014 followed by the Federal Aviation Administration two months later. The A350 entered service on January 15, 2015 with Qatar Airways as its launch customer.
