Human: Wind energy is harnessed from air currents with the help of wind turbines or sails to generate mechanical or electrical power. Windmills are used to produce mechanical power, while windpumps pump water and sails propel ships. As a renewable alternative to fossil fuels, wind energy is abundant, widely available, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, and requires minimal land use. The overall impact on the environment is significantly less damaging than that of non-renewable power sources. Wind farms consist of multiple individual wind turbines connected to the electric power transmission network. Onshore wind is an affordable source of electricity, often competitive with or even cheaper than coal or gas plants in many areas. Offshore wind is steadier and stronger than on land, and offshore farms have a lower visual impact, but construction and maintenance costs are significantly higher. Small onshore wind farms can feed energy into the grid or provide electricity to isolated off-grid locations. Wind energy is highly consistent from year to year but experiences significant variation over shorter time scales. As a result, it is often used in conjunction with other electric power sources to ensure a reliable supply. When the proportion of wind energy in a region increases, upgrading the grid and reducing the ability to replace conventional production may become necessary. However, techniques such as maintaining excess capacity, geographically distributing turbines, using dispatchable backing sources, ensuring sufficient hydroelectric power, exporting and importing power to neighboring areas, utilizing vehicle-to-grid strategies or reducing demand when wind production is low can often overcome these challenges. Furthermore, weather forecasting enables the electricity network to prepare for predictable variations in production that occur regularly.
