The AIM-120, or Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM), was designed to replace Sparrow and Phoenix missile systems. As a beyond visual range (BVR) air-to-air missile, it uses active transpit and receive radar guidance instead of the previous semi-active only radar guidance, offering a fire-and-forget upgrade over earlier models with a 7-inch diameter body, differing from the 8" bodies of its predecessors.
