Agrippina Minor, also known as Julia Agrippina or Julia Augusta Agrippina, was the great granddaughter of Emperor Augustus, a direct descendant through her mother's lineage and her husband Claudius' adoption. Her family ties made her Tiberius' adopted granddaughter and Caligula's sister. She married Emperor Claudius, who adopted her son Nero as his heir, making him the next in line for the throne. Agrippina Minor was known for being ruthless and one of the most powerful women in Roman history. A 1685 marble sculpture in the Tuileries Garden depicts Agrippina as a young woman standing on a rectangular pedestal, wearing a toga and holding a scroll in her left hand. The French sculptor Robert Doisy created this impressive piece which stands at approximately 12 feet tall. Unfortunately, Agrippina's right hand and wrist are missing from the sculpture. She is shown looking into the distance with a crown on her head.
