August Weizenberg, a renowned Estonian sculptor born in 1837, left an indelible mark on the art world until his passing in 1921. His father, a skilled shoemaker, instilled in him the foundation of a lifelong passion for craftsmanship. Between 1858 and 1862, Weizenberg honed his skills as a woodcarver in Erastvere. By the 1860s, he had established himself as an accomplished cabinetmaker, working tirelessly in Frankfurt and Berlin. A generous sponsorship from Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald paved the way for Weizenberg to travel to Saint Petersburg, where he was mentored by Alexander Bock. His artistic journey continued at the Imperial Academy of Arts, followed by a stint at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1870 to 1873. From 1873 until 1890, Weizenberg called Rome his home.
