He served as close friend, son-in-law, and trusted lieutenant to Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, while responsible for the construction of many notable buildings in the history of Rome and important military triumphs, most notably at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC against the forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. As a direct result of these victories, Octavianus rose to become the first Roman Emperor, adopting the name Augustus. Agrippa supported Augustus in making Rome a city of gleaming marble and renovating aqueducts to provide every citizen with unparalleled public services. He oversaw the creation of numerous baths, stately porticoes, lush gardens, as well as the iconic Pantheon. Agrippa was also married to Julia the Elder (later married to Emperor Tiberius), maternal grandfather to Caligula, and maternal great-grandfather to Emperor Nero.
