What is depicted here? We can clearly see a man with a bull pulling a plow as it tills the rugged terrain behind him. In the background stands a tree, its presence adding depth to the scene. Technical specifications regarding the statue reveal that it is an example of a stele - a stone or wooden slab typically taller than it is wide, erected in ancient Western culture as a monument, often for funerary or commemorative purposes. Stelae can also be used for government notices or territorial markers to mark borders and delineate land ownership. The surface of the stele may feature text and/or ornamentation, which can be inscribed, carved in relief, or painted onto the slab. Modern gravestones may technically be considered the modern equivalent of ancient stelae, although this term is rarely applied in this way. Alberto Arnoldi was a 14th-century Italian sculptor and architect born in Florence. In 1364, he created the colossal group of the Madonna and Child with two angels for the Loggia del Bigallo in Florence. Arnoldi worked on this project from 1359 to 1364. As an architect, he directed the works of Florence Cathedral around 1358.
