Age of the Universe Gear Demonstration

Age of the Universe Gear Demonstration

thingiverse

This is a system of gears that, when assembled, will cause the final gear to take roughly the current estimated age of the universe (13.8 billion years) to make one complete rotation when rotating the handle at 1 revolution per second. As a machine, it's completely impractical, but as a science demonstration, it's mildly fascinating. Enjoy! You'll need to print 25 copies of the "5-1 Gear Ratio.3mf" and 1 of each of the other files to assemble. The assembly is pretty straightforward. If pieces don't fit, some sanding will be necessary. Everything was created with Microsoft 3D builder, except for the teeth of the gears, which were generated by https://www.emachineshop.com/gear-design-software/.
