This is a close-up look at an agate discovered on an Arizona roadside, created by layers of quartz being deposited by hot water holding silica as it cools down and leaves behind thin silicate layers atop earlier ones. Gold and silver also settle out of solution along with the quartz. Some microorganisms thrive in the hot water and gather gold to shield themselves from the intense chemical reactions occurring nearby, ultimately forming nuggets.
