#AFV: Whippet Good ##A-Folded-Vehicle (AFV) Series No. 4 ##When a Problem Comes Along, You Must Whippet This is another installment in the series of models known as *A-Folded-Vehicle* or AFV. As you'll recall, this series of model vehicle "kits" can be printed on a 6- x 6-inch 3D printer bed. This enables you to obtain all of the parts for this model in a single printing session. ###The Model This is a 1:144+ scale model of the British World War I Medium Mark A Whippet tank. I call it a "plus size" model due to it being slightly larger than a true 1:144 scale. This enlargement was made to aid with assembly - big fingers and tiny parts don't work well together...especially when working with glue. There are 21 parts in this Whippet kit. The complete model can be easily assembled in less than one hour. Testors Liquid Cement for Plastic Models (#3507) is recommended for assembling your model. Enjoy. ###Step-By-Step Please note that each assembly step is supported by a similarly named JPG photo. Step 1. Cement the bottom hull plate and the two engine cover plates to the right side hull. Watch the orientation of these pieces; the thickened edge of the engine cover plates and the bottom hull plate's edge with the two suspension bumps (boxes) all face the rear of the tank. Also, the two engine cover plates should be slightly tilted towards the centerline of the tank--forming a small tent-like shape. Step 2. Glue the left side hull to the subassembly you built in Step 1. Step 3. Attach the fuel tank to the front of the two engine cover plates. Then flip the tank over and glue the forward bottom hull plate over the gap between the fuel tank and the bottom hull plate. Ensure that the open slot on the forward bottom hull plate faces towards the rear of the tank. Step 4. Glue the rear plate to the back of the bottom hull plate. Then attach the smaller bumper step plate to the rear plate. Step 5. Cement the four support plates to the inside of the bottom hull plate. Three of these pieces are attached to the rear stowage boxes. Just snip them loose and glue them in place. Step 6. Attach the slanted front armor plate to the sloped edges of the side hulls. Step 7. Attach the crew compartment to the support plates that you installed in Step 5. Step 8. Squeeze the rear deck underneath the rear of the crew compartment while the cement is still pliable. If it doesn't fit, just cement it to the top of the rear bumper step plate. Step 9. Make any final adjustments to your Whippet model as needed. ###Facts About the Whippet The Whippet was a light tank used by the British during World War I. It was designed for reconnaissance and infantry support. The tank had a crew of four and weighed around 14 tons. Its top speed was about 8.3 mph on flat ground. --_AFV #7_, Medium Tanks Marks A-D, Ellis, Chris & Chamberlain, Peter; Profile Publications Limited, England. -- *Whip It* by Devo; 1980, *Freedom of Choice*; Warner Bros. ###Armistice Day On November 11th, 1918, an armistice was signed, ending World War I. This marked the end of four years of fighting and the loss of millions of lives. ###Support My Work If you'd like to support my 3D modeling endeavors, then please consider purchasing a copy of my new book about modeling.
