Martin Saks was a prominent artist during the tumultuous Soviet era. Exhibitions from 1935 to 1960 boldly contradict claims that artistic life in the Soviet Union was stifled by ideology, forcing artists to conform entirely to what was then called 'social order.' In the post-war period, between the mid-1950s and 1960s, the Leningrad school reached its peak. Artists who graduated from the Academy (Repin Institute of Arts) in the 1930s-50s were now at the height of their creative powers. They eagerly presented their art, strived for innovation, and sought to learn even more. Their unique perspective, encompassing all images, ideas, and dispositions of their time, found full expression in portraits by Lev Russov, Victor Oreshnikov, Boris Korneev, Semion Rotnitsky, Vladimir Gorb, Engels Kozlov, landscapes by Nikolai Timkov, Vladimir Ovchinnikov, Sergei Osipov, Alexander Semionov, Arseny Semionov, Nikolai Galakhov, and genre paintings by Nikolai Pozdneev, Yuri Neprintsev, Yevsey Moiseenko, Andrey Milnikov. The art of this period showcased an exceptional appreciation for life and creative work.
