Africa, the second-largest and second most populous continent, occupies 30.3 million km2 (11.7 million square miles) or 6% of Earth's total surface area and 20% of its land area. It houses about 16% of the world's human population, which was approximately 1.2 billion in 2016. Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Isthmus of Suez and Red Sea to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Africa includes Madagascar and several archipelagos. It comprises 54 fully recognized sovereign states (countries), nine territories, and two de facto independent states with limited or no recognition. Most African nations are in the Northern Hemisphere, while a significant number are in the Southern Hemisphere. Africa boasts a rich cultural and linguistic tapestry, resulting from diverse ethnicities. European colonization of Africa occurred mainly in the late 19th century, with most present-day countries originating from decolonization processes in the 20th century. The African Union, established by African nations, is headquartered in Addis Ababa. Paleoanthropologists believe that Africa is the oldest inhabited territory on Earth, where the human species originated. Fossils and evidence of human habitation have been discovered as far back as 7 million years ago during the mid-20th century. This digital model of Africa features color-coded regions, made with 3 and 4 point polygons, including separate parts for each country and an mtl file for colorization. The model includes approximately 66,478 polygons and has basic UV mapping but no textures.
