The carving depicts two figures, one standing on the other's head, crafted from Gabon ebony wood. "A 135 cm tall carved and painted wooden sculpture...executed in an unconventional style...The modern state of the Republic of Gabon did not exist at the end of the 19th century, and previous experiences suggest that the term was used in museum contexts for a large and somewhat loosely defined area in western Central Africa, south of Biafra Bay (present-day Nigeria and Cameroon) and north of the Congo River. The provenance of the object is therefore not particularly well-documented."
