Africa Group, part of the Albert memorial in South Kensington, London
myminifactory
The Albert Memorial is situated in Kensington Gardens, London, directly north of the Royal Albert Hall. Commissioned by Queen Victoria in memory of her beloved husband, Prince Albert, who died from typhoid in 1861, the memorial was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the Gothic Revival style. Opened in July 1872 by Queen Victoria, with the statue of Albert ceremonially seated in 1875, the memorial features an ornate canopy or pavilion, resembling a Gothic ciborium over a church's high altar, containing a statue of Prince Albert facing south. The memorial stands at 176 feet tall and took over ten years to complete at a cost of £120,000, equivalent to about £10,000,000 in 2010, funded by public subscription. At the corners of the central area and outer area, two allegorical sculpture programs are situated: four groups depict Victorian industrial arts and sciences (agriculture, commerce, engineering, and manufacturing), while four more groups represent Europe, Asia, Africa, and The Americas at the four corners. Each continent-group features several ethnographic figures and a large animal, including a camel for Africa, a bison for The Americas, an elephant for Asia, and a bull for Europe. The Asia group was carved by John Henry Foley, while Africa was sculpted by William Theed, America by John Bell, and Europe by Patrick MacDowell.
