Locality: Navajun, La Rioja, Spain Size: 2 cm x 2 cm x 2 cm Formula: FeS2 Description: In a rare display of symmetry, three identical pyrite crystals unite at a shared crystallographic plane to form a remarkable twinned crystal. This exceptional cluster of mirror-bright brassy pyrite cubes presents an aesthetically pleasing intergrowth. The fully crystallized isometric crystals have no point of attachment, classified as floaters, with only one small corner on the bottom showing minor damage. When multiple parts of twinned crystals grow into each other, they are referred to as penetration twins. Pyrite's distinctive brassy golden color led to its nickname "Fool's gold," while its name originates from the Greek word pyr, meaning "fire," due to sparks flying when struck with another mineral or metal.
