Aeschylus, born around 525/524 BC and died approximately 456/455 BC, was a renowned ancient Greek playwright known for his groundbreaking work in tragedy. He is widely regarded as the pioneer of tragedy, laying the foundation for the genre that would go on to captivate audiences for centuries. Scholars' comprehension of tragedy as an art form begins with his contributions, and understanding of earlier tragedies is largely derived from inferences drawn from his surviving masterpieces. According to Aristotle's observations, Aeschylus expanded the dramatic potential of theater by introducing a greater number of characters, creating opportunities for intricate conflict among them; previously, characters had limited their interactions to the collective voice of the chorus.
