The L-39 Albatros, a high-performance jet trainer, was developed in Czechoslovakia to meet the demand for a C-39 trainer during the 1960s. It was designed to replace the L-29 Delfin as the primary training aircraft and served as the first second-generation jet trainer. The L-39 also boasts being the first turbofan-powered trainer ever produced, with its design later evolving into the L-59 Super Albatros and the prototype L-139 with a Garrett TFE731 engine. In 1997, production of the L-159 ALCA, an advanced development of the design, began. The L-39 has seen widespread use across more than 30 air forces worldwide, with over 2,800 units serving in this capacity. The aircraft's impressive reputation makes it the most widely used jet trainer globally. Not only is it utilized for basic and advanced pilot training but also for combat missions in a light-attack role. Uniquely, despite its extensive use, the Albatros has never been assigned a NATO reporting name. In 2014, Aero Vodochody announced the L-39NG at the Farnborough Airshow, marking the launch of an upgraded and modernized version of this iconic jet trainer.
