This sculpture brings Aeolus to life, draped in cloth that flows effortlessly along with the wind. In Greek mythology, Aeolus is a name associated with three legendary figures who often leave historians puzzled about their true identities. Even ancient mythographers seem unclear which one of these characters was which. Diodorus Siculus made an attempt to clarify each of these three individuals, though it's clear he struggled as well. His interpretation will be followed here. The first Aeolus is a son of Hellen and the founder of the Aeolian people. The second Aeolus is a son of Poseidon who led a colony to islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The third Aeolus is a son of Hippotes, mentioned in the Odyssey and Aeneid as the Keeper of the Winds.
