The adult fly brain is composed of approximately 960,000 neurons and over 2 million synapses. It contains a pair of optic lobes which process visual information from the compound eyes. The central complex is made up of several distinct regions including the fan-shaped body, ellipsoid body and the mushroom bodies. These structures are involved in navigation and memory formation. The mushroom bodies are particularly prominent in flies and are considered to be key components in olfactory learning and memory.
