Adoration of the Magi

This one of seven high-reliefs tells the story of events described in the Gospel of Matthew. Nicola Pisano (born 1220/1225 - died 1278/1287) carved this work, adorning the pulpit of St Mary of the Assumption Cathedral in Sienna, Italy. Listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1995, this Tuscany landmark is a treasure trove of art and history. In this second relief, three Magi find Jesus by following a star, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The scene is set amidst a black magus, an entourage with mastiffs, and four trees that suggest a lush landscape. This work perfectly complements "The Presentation in the Temple" and "Flights into Egypt," two other masterpieces from Nicola Pisano's collection, now housed at the Statens Museum for Kunst.
