Adorants approaching Demeter and Persephone

Persephone was Demeter's beloved daughter. One day while Persephone was busy gathering flowers in a lush meadow, Hades, the god of the underworld, swooped in and captured her. No one had any idea where she had vanished or what had befallen her. Demeter was consumed by worry and grief. She asked Helios, the sun god, for answers but received none. When she learned that Hades had snatched her daughter, Demeter's anger boiled over. For a year, she refused to let crops and plants grow, causing a terrible famine to grip the earth. Zeus intervened, ordering Hades to release Persephone. Overjoyed, Persephone returned home, but Hades played a trick on her, making her eat some pomegranate seeds before she left the underworld. He knew that if she consumed anything from the land of the dead, she would be bound to return to him for part of each year. Demeter was ecstatic to have her daughter back by her side. However, every time Persephone had to return to Hades, Demeter mourned deeply once more. This is why, for a portion of each year, plants and crops stop growing. When Persephone returns to earth, the land bursts forth with life anew. This remarkable sculpture is part of "Scan The World," a non-profit initiative introduced by MyMiniFactory.
