Adonis stands out as the most stunning and sought-after young man in Greek mythology, born with a tainted legacy that he couldn't escape - his mother Myrrha had given birth to him after an illicit relationship with her own father. As a consequence of her actions, Myrrha was transformed into a tree – the myrrh tree – leaving Adonis to face the world alone. His life was already predetermined for tragedy when, still quite young, he met his demise at the hooves of a wild boar during a hunting expedition. The tree on which Adonis is leaning and the dead hare by his side serve as poignant reminders of his birth and death. When the original model of Adonis was unveiled in Rome in 1808, it sparked an immense surge of enthusiasm among art enthusiasts. Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, an avid art collector, commissioned a marble replica for his Glyptotek museum in Munich, where it remains one of its prized possessions.
