Thomas and John Knoll, American brothers, created Photoshop in 1988. Thomas Knoll began programming on a Macintosh Plus the application that would become Photoshop, then called Display. His brother, working at Industrial Light & Magic (George Lucas's special effects company), showed interest in the program and suggested it be more than just an image viewer. The idea was born, and they started programming. Six months later, they had the program's foundation ready, named ImagePro, but changed to Photoshop when a name conflict arose. Initial Photoshop copies were not sold by Adobe but came with a Barneyscan scanner. Around 200 copies were sold this way. In 1988, John Knoll presented the application to Apple. Russell Brown, Adobe's art director, took interest and they closed the deal. The first Photoshop was launched in 1990 for Mac.
