The Soviet Union's Fleet Admiral Kuznetsov, a heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser of Project 11435, is part of the Russian Navy fleet and is the only one in its class as of 2012. Designed to engage large surface targets and protect maritime connections from probable enemy attacks, it belongs to the 1st rank of naval ships. Its commander generally holds the rank of Captain 1st rank. Named after Admiral of the Fleet Nicholas Gerasimovitch Kuznetsov, it was built at Nikolaev's Black Sea Shipyard and serves in the Northern Fleet. The cruiser accommodates Su-25UTG and Su-33 aircraft from the 279th naval fighter air regiment (based in Severomorsk-3) and Ka-27 and Ka-29 helicopters from the 830th separate ship antisubmarine helicopter regiment (home at Severomorsk-1).
