The Soviet Union's Fleet Admiral Kuznetsov, a heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser in Project 11435, is the sole member of its class within Russia's navy fleet as of 2012. Its primary function is to engage large surface targets and protect maritime connections from probable enemy attacks. As a first-rank navy ship, it requires a commander with at least Captain 1st rank. Named after Admiral of the Fleet, Nicholas Gerasimovitch Kuznetsov, this vessel was constructed in Nikolaev at the Black Sea Shipyard and currently serves in the Northern Fleet. The cruiser accommodates Su-25UTG and Su-33 aircraft from the 279th naval fighter air regiment (Severomorsk-3) and Ka-27 and Ka-29 helicopters of the 830th separate ship antisubmarine helicopter regiment (home airfield - Severomorsk-1).
