This is an updated thing, the original one can be found here. The cooling fan duct is the Mistral 2.1a.

This main goal of this sensor mount is to bring the SN04 into a position where the entire bed can be measured for mesh-leveling while giving easy sensor height adjustability without compromising thermal stability with the removal of the heatsink. Height adjustability is achieved by using an M3 screw, a feature I consider mandatory these days. This revision includes a fan shroud (as promised from v1.0) for a 25mm fan (not 40mm like the stock fan) and a slightly modified base plate to accommodate the changes. The fan shroud has got some oddities built into is as I designed it in a hurry so it's not perfect, but it is functional. The shroud covers the side of the extruder where the heatsink used to reside. It has some ducting that redirects most of the airflow straight up as to not affect the print. Without the mass of the heatsink and some airflow, everything metal on the carriage sometimes would get hot. Not "can't-touch-it" hot but really, really warm with the right set of conditions. This new version does away with that thermal issue.

The original thing has the full write-up, but if it's TL;DR...

PROS-

Works with common SN04 leveling sensor

Sensor range covers the entire area of the hot bed.

Fine tunable height adjustment by turning an M3 screw.

Compatible with very efficient common fan duct model.

Reduced X-axis carriage weight compared to stock assembly.

CONS-

Sensor can run into left Z-axis rod coupling during X-axis homing at low bed and Z heights (sensor wiggles out of the way though). Fixed by increasing Z homing height in Marlin.

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Anet

Printer:

A8

Rafts:

No

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.15mm

Infill:

25%

Filament: eSun PETG Silver

Notes:

0.4mm nozzle, 0.48mm width, seven top/bottom and four perimeters, 60mm/sec, 80% outline and infill speed, 220c hotend, 60c bed.

Materials and Assembly ======================
Hardware:

Base Plate:

(1) M3x25 - left mounting screw

(1) M3 hex nut - recessed nut for Sled Base mounting

Sensor Sled Base:

(1) M3x6 (custom made, M3x5 should work fine) - Sled Base mounting screw

(1) M3x20 - sensor height adjustability screw

Sensor Sled:

(2) M3x15 - sensor mount screws

(2) M3 hex nut - recessed sensor mount nuts

(1) M3 hex nut - for adjustability screw

Fan Shroud:

(2) M3x12 - Fan Mount screws

(2) M3 hex nuts - recessed Fan Mount nuts

(1) M3x45 - Fan Shroud mount screw

Assembly:

The Base Plate traps an M3 nut that the Sensor Sled Base uses as a mounting point. There is also a captured M3 nut used for the height adjustment and two recessed nuts are used to mount the SN04 to the Sensor Sled. The Fan Shroud uses two more recessed nuts to mount the 25x25x7mm fan. Hopefully the pictures help.

NOTE:

Do not install the right exposed screw on the Base Plate. Those pictures with the silver plate are from v1.0. You can use the right screw for plate alignment purposes but remove it as that hole is for the fan shroud screw.

Marlin Settings

Other than the usual auto bed leveling adjustments required in Marlin's "config.h" file, this is the offset settings for the sensor mount's position:

#define X_PROBE_OFFSET_FROM_EXTRUDER -30 // X offset: -left +right [of the nozzle]

#define Y_PROBE_OFFSET_FROM_EXTRUDER 0 // Y offset: -front +behind [the nozzle]

#define Z_PROBE_OFFSET_FROM_EXTRUDER 0 // Z offset: -below +above [the nozzle]

To eliminate the sensor crashing into the rod coupling uncomment this line (also in the"config.h" file):

#define Z_HOMING_HEIGHT 20

In my case, 20mm is enough to have clearance between the coupler and the sensor, and I have the original heat bed pretty much bottomed out on the springs.

YMMV.

Category: 3D Printer Accessories
