Adjustable Laser Jack-Stand Bed!

While I was tackling another project, I stumbled upon these budget-friendly laboratory adjustable jack-stands (http://amzn.to/2hJSitj). They sparked an idea - using them as a base for an adjustable laser bed. However, the 8-inch version stood too high, but the 4-inch one was just right in terms of height. Unfortunately, it was too small for my laser bed, so I created a 3D printed bed extender, 6 inches by 6 inches (which is the standard size of material I use), as well as an 8x6 inch version for larger stock. Keep in mind that you'll need to insert your hand into the front to adjust the knob. This design is somewhat sacrificial, as the bed will be exposed to laser burns, which can release toxic fumes when working with PLA, a material I've had experience with in the past and would rather avoid. I also designed 2mm pins for standoffs, which might seem unusual at first. Most of my cuts are 3mm thick, but lifting them up by 2mm allows me to detect when a cut is complete without compromising the beam's integrity. I've learned this from experience with laser-cutting ABS, which can be messy and difficult to work with. The design also includes slots for neodymium magnets (http://amzn.to/2jPnUSp), allowing you to secure the bed from underneath and use another magnet on top as a hold-down.
