UPDATE 26 APR 2013: Successfully completed a functional full-size prototype of this design. Initially, the hub was backward, but the issue was promptly resolved. However, the filament bundle formed a triangle shape, so I added four arms instead of three. Yay for cookies! The STL files (tri and quad hubs) have been updated, and a tutorial video will be posted once better PLA is available. The current blue PLA is quite challenging to work with. 20 APR 2013: This durable "doo-hicky" has proven to be usable and viable after making adjustments to the printer's calibration. A video explaining the design has been posted (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx1Xh1OjD5k). Upcoming changes include refinements to the design and a build tutorial upon printing an entire spool. 18 APR 2013: The "peg holes" have been increased in size (2.20mm) and realigned for improved efficiency. An end-clip spot on the hands was implemented, and two hand sizes (short and long) were created to accommodate various roll sizes. User feedback is welcome for further improvements. The design allows for adjustable locking positions (1.65-1.80mm) using zipties or similar items. The first set of arms, ends, and support pieces has been printed and functions well except for the filament peg area, which will be readjusted. A drill bit may be needed to clear the holes if printing before the adjustment. This design is a derivative of the "Minimized" Heavy Duty Filament Spool (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:69602). Happy printing and feel free to request older files or modifications.
