Adapter for Sony AS action cams to 2D brushless gimbals for GoPro
thingiverse
This modification enables you to install a Sony action cam of the HDR-AS family (AS15, AS30, AS100, etc.) into a low-cost 2D GoPro gimbal such as this one. Thanks to its slender design, these action cams allow for rotations ranging from +70°-180° pitch and ±100° roll, greatly surpassing what a GoPro can achieve using standard mounts. To implement this modification, all you have to do is disassemble the pitch motor and its mounting arm from the gimbal by unscrewing nine screws in total. The roll motor and frame won't need disassembly. The center of gravity for this setup is centered around the motor axis with a slight deviation (~1mm) towards the bottom, simplifying work for the gimbal controller. I have also moved the sensor position from the bottom to the top, increasing the range of motion available for the pitch motor. In the photos above, the gimbal is mounted on a Tarot 650 frame using my custom fixture. Print Settings Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: No Post-Printing Print both parts. Disassemble from the GoPro mount the gimbal's pitch motor and mounting arm. Save all screws. Detach the sensor from the GoPro mount Mount the printed arm to the roll motor. Mount the pitch motor on the printed arm Mount the printed camera fixture onto the pitch motor Attach the sensor using glue or double-sided tape on the flat bit located on the top side of the camera fixture. Rearrange cables. Place the camera in the fixture. Friction should be sufficient to keep it secure, although adding a rubber band can provide added peace of mind. Connect the gimbal to your PC via simpleBGC software. Switch the Z-axis direction from -Z to +Z and verify that the sensor is functioning correctly. If it isn't working, adjust the axis direction until you're sure it is. Finally, power on the gimbal and fine-tune its PID gains according to its new load. For those unfamiliar with setting these parameters, there are helpful tutorials available on YouTube.
