I built an adapter to connect a 1/2"-13 bolt directly to a flexible coupler, allowing me to attach a Hall effect sensor to the opposite side of the coupler and have it rotate in perfect sync with the bolt's movement. This innovative adapter has already proven itself on my homemade motion simulator, but its versatility means it could be used for many other projects as well.
