Adam

In 1881, Rodin was awarded a prestigious commission by the Ministry of Fine Arts for two massive statues of Adam and Eve. He envisioned placing them strategically on either side of The Gates of Hell, drawing inspiration from Michelangelo's Slaves, which flanked the door from the Palazzo Stanga in the Louvre. Rodin likely reused an existing work to create Adam, as he had exhibited a similar statue under the title The Creation of Man at the Salon of 1881. The title and pose of this large-scale figure underscore the profound impact of Michelangelo's works on Rodin's art, particularly his famous painting of Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (1508-1512).
