AdaFruit FTDI Friend Holder

AdaFruit FTDI Friend Holder

AdaFruit offers a convenient Serial to USB adapter called the FTDI Friend, enabling you to link your laptop or computer directly to a digital level serial port on a Raspberry Pi or Beaglebone using the FTDI serial drivers. I often use these adapters when interacting with evaluation boards but realize there isn't an easy method for holding them in place unless you have an FTDI compatible header on the board so this holder can be stuck firmly to my plastic proto area like my Standoffs or PowerJack and doesn't budge around. It is specifically designed to fit well on my Replicator 1/Dual printer, although you may need to adjust the width for a snugger fit. Instructions are pretty straightforward but will rely heavily on your printer's accuracy level. The board should slip in with a gentle friction so it won't be dislodged while plugging in or unplugging the USB cable but not too tight that the plastic becomes misshapen. According to my calipers, the gap between the boards should measure about 17.75mm wide for an ideal fit, although I printed mine at 18.25 to achieve a secure hold. You can also view one of my photos in which it's mounted with some double-sticky-back foam tape onto my Panavise circuit board holder for additional support and security. I opt to print it using Simplify3D instead of the Makerbot Desktop for a better quality result.
