In December 2007, Honda laid out plans to launch a new supercar by 2010, based on the aggressive styling of the Acura ASCC Advanced Sports Car Concept.[9] By early 2008, test prototypes for production were rolling out but a year later in December 2008, Honda canceled all plans due to a rapidly worsening economic climate.[10] Instead, Honda took to unveiling its HSV-010 GT concept in March 2010 as the new challenger for the Japanese SuperGT Championship. The car was meant to compete at the track but would never make it to public roads. Honda confirmed rumors in April 2011 that they were developing an all-new NSX successor with an official reveal planned within a year.[11] At the North American International Auto Show in December 2012, Honda rolled out their new concept as the Acura NSX Concept with a plan to deliver it for public sale in 2016. For this version of the sports car, the designers in Marysville, Ohio decided to hang on to the name 'NSX', but this time they renamed it New Sports eXperience.[12] In sharp contrast to its first generation counterpart built exclusively in Japan, this latest version was engineered from the ground up at Honda's U.S. manufacturing facility with chief engineer Ted Klaus leading the charge. Under the hood of this radical sports car beats a potent hybrid powerplant consisting of 3.5 L twin-turbo V6 engine paired with three super-powerful electric motors and SH-AWD all wheel drive, for close to 600 horsepower output, combined with an agile transmission and space frame design built from cutting-edge lightweight materials. The historic sale of the very first production unit (VIN #001) took place at the Barrett Jackson auction house on January 29th, 2016 where NASCAR owner Rick Hendrick took it home after making a stunning bid of $1.2 million; this full sum would go to the charitable Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and Camp Southern Ground.[14][15][16]
