Known as the Cequeta Aqueduct, it directs water lifted by the Alcantarilla Waterwheel from the Alquibla or Barreras canal, crossing through the "cañá" in direction towards the Black Voice, below the urban core. The waterwheel, requested by the Diocese of Cartagena to the Council of Murcia in 1451 and built in 1457, has been replaced several times as shown by the different reconstructions of the canal. The first waterwheel must have fulfilled its function until 1549, when it was replaced after the flood of 1545 that devastated the Villa de Alcantarilla. The archaeological excavations being carried out in the surroundings of the aqueduct demonstrate the existence of Roman remains prior (architectural structures and ceramic materials from centuries I to III AD).
