Activated Carbon P100 3M Respirator Filter
thingiverse
This is a reusable P100 filter with allowances for activated carbon inserts, designed to reduce exposure to volatile organic compounds, bacteria, and viruses. The activated carbon is specifically intended to minimize the risk of exposure to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). This filter fits 3M 6000 series and 7000 series respirators with bayonet connections. I call it the NORA filter, a customizable design that can be remixed to carry the word NORA in various ways. Consider adding elements like Novel-coronavirus, Organic-compound, or Asbestos to create unique variations of this design. The base, top, and canister should be printed using PETG or ABS, while the three rings can be printed with PLA. A 30% infill is recommended for a smooth finish and improved sealing. When printing the base, ensure that the bayonet connector face is down to achieve a seamless finish. Removing the top and rings from the print bed is easiest using a hex wrench in the bolt holes. The canister can be removed by prying at the lift slots with a screwdriver (consult the accompanying picture for guidance). The P100 material (0.3 micron) and activated carbon sheets are readily available on Amazon, often sold together as all-in-one packages for air purifier filter replacements. HEPA material filters down to 0.3 micron, making it an ideal choice for this design. I recommend purchasing the GHM True HEPA Filter Plus 4 Carbon Replacement Pre-Filters A Winix 115115 Size 21 Compatible with Winix Air Purifier WAC5300 WAC5500 WAC6300 5300 5500 from Amazon. When handling the HEPA material, ensure that the fuzzy side faces outward. The activated carbon reduces organic compounds, bacteria, and viruses through adsorption, while the HEPA filter should be positioned closest to the bayonet connector to prevent exposure to particles from the activated carbon material. To assemble this design, you will need 40mm long M3 bolts and corresponding nuts. While 30mm long bolts can also work, I find that 40mm are easier to handle. You can purchase these components on Amazon: M3-0.5x40mm Socket Head Cap Bolts Screws, 304 Stainless Steel 18-8, Allen Socket Drive, Fully Machine Thread, Bright Finish, 50 pcs by Eastlo Fastener and uxcell a16033100ux0563 M3 Carbon Steel Grade 8 Hexagon Hex Nut Black Carbon Steel (Pack of 100). This design allows for four stages of filter membranes. I recommend using one P100 filter and three activated carbon filters if you are focusing on protection against COVID-19. Remember, your eyes can also be a virus ingress point, so wear sealed goggles when handling the filter.
