The plot originates from ancient mythology, specifically from Artemis, a goddess of hunting who was witnessed naked during bathing by Actaeon, causing her to transform him into a deer. As a result, the young man was brutally torn apart by his own hunting gods. Born as a grandson of Apollo and son of Aristaeus, Actaeon's story has been frequently referenced by masters of painting and sculpture throughout history. One such depiction is found in a sculptor's rendition of the young hunter in motion, with a quiver positioned behind his back, caught in an abrupt turn - as if he had suddenly spotted Artemis bathing. The sculptor skillfully captures the hero's right hand gesture, which appears to freeze movement, by employing this technique. Furthermore, the sculptor successfully conveys the effect of an unexpected obstacle, presenting a complex view of the figure and altering the body's plastics as it transforms into a deer. The spots of light on the smoothly polished and stained bronze highlight the intricate dynamics of the sculpture's composition. Actaeon, a renowned hero from Greek mythology, was born in Boeotia to Aristaeus, a priestly herdsman, and Autonoe. Like Achilles in a later generation, Actaeon received training under the centaur Chiron. However, he ultimately fell victim to Artemis' fatal wrath, with varying accounts of his transgression: "the only certainty is what Aktaion suffered, his pathos, and what Artemis did: the hunter became the hunted; he was transformed into a stag, and his raging hounds, struck with a wolf's frenzy (Lyssa), tore him apart as they would a stag." This iconic motif has been consistently represented in ancient art, as well as Renaissance and post-Renaissance depictions.
